Mental math strategies
- Addition: break numbers into round numbers: 47 + 38 = 47 + 40 − 2 = 85
- Multiplication by 9: multiply by 10, subtract the number: 7 × 9 = 70 − 7 = 63
- Multiplication by 11: add the two digits and place between them: 35 × 11 = 3(3+5)5 = 385
- Division: use divisibility rules: divisible by 3 if digit sum is divisible by 3
- Squaring numbers ending in 5: multiply the tens digit by (tens+1) and append 25: 35² = 3×4 = 12 → 1225
