UK office whip-rounds: cash apps have changed the etiquette

A "whip-round" for a leaving colleague or a group gift is a long-standing British workplace tradition, and it has largely moved from cash in an envelope to a payment app link (Monzo, PayPal) shared over email or a group chat. Rounding the ask to a clean number, as this calculator does, matters more than ever with digital payments, since an odd amount like £11.36 is far more likely to be ignored or rounded down by contributors than a clean £10 or £15 request.

Who is left out of the calculation matters

Whoever organises the collection should decide upfront whether the person leaving, a manager who is not expected to contribute the same amount, or someone on leave, is included in the total headcount, since getting this wrong is the most common reason a whip-round falls short of the target amount.
