Because the UK venue market is so wide-ranging, the venue and catering share of the budget can realistically run higher than the 40% suggested here for a premium venue.

Civil ceremony versus a venue with a wedding licence

A legally binding wedding in England and Wales must take place at a register office or a venue that holds a specific wedding licence, which is a smaller pool of locations than "anywhere that looks nice", and licensed venues often charge a premium precisely because of that legal status. Many couples budget for a separate, unlicensed reception venue after a short register office ceremony to keep the licensed-venue premium out of the catering and reception budget.
