Estimates the yarn needed for a knitting project based on stitch count, row count, gauge, and ball weight. Always buy 10-15% more than the estimate to account for variations.

How the calculation works

The estimator uses your gauge to calculate the fabric area in stitches and rows, then estimates yarn consumption per stitch based on the yarn weight and meters per 100g. The waste factor covers seams, yarn tails, and minor mistakes.

Tips for accurate estimates

  • Gauge swatch: knit a 10×10 cm swatch with your needles and yarn before calculating; pattern gauge recommendations are a starting point, not a guarantee
  • Colorwork (Fair Isle/Intarsia): add 20-30% extra; every carried strand adds yarn
  • Cables: add 15-20% extra; cables use more yarn than plain stockinette
  • Lace: use the actual stitch and row count of the charted section

Reading the ball band

The meters per 100g (or yards per oz) is printed on every ball band. This is the most important number for this calculator. Common examples:

  • Lace weight: 700-900 m/100g
  • Fingering / Sock: 400-500 m/100g
  • DK: 200-250 m/100g
  • Worsted/Aran: 150-200 m/100g
  • Bulky: 80-130 m/100g

UK and European yarn brands

Yarn availability varies by country, affecting which brands to search for when substituting yarns:

  • Drops Design (Norway): the most widely available affordable EU yarn brand. Sold in dedicated Drops shops across the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, and online.
