How to use the Image Format Converter

  1. Drop or select an image (PNG, JPEG, or WebP).
  2. Choose the output format and adjust quality if needed.
  3. Click Convert & Download: the file is converted in your browser.

When to use each format

JPEG: best for photographs and images with many gradients and colors. Uses lossy compression that produces small files. Does not support transparency. Standard for email attachments and photographs shared online.

PNG: uses lossless compression and supports full transparency (alpha channel). Best for logos, icons, UI screenshots, diagrams, and any image where color accuracy and sharp edges matter. PNG files are larger than JPEG for photographs.

WebP: Google's modern format that achieves 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality, and supports transparency like PNG. Supported in all modern browsers. The best format for web use when maximum compatibility is not required.

Common conversions and why

  • PNG → JPEG: reduce file size for photographs that do not need transparency
  • JPEG → PNG: preserve quality for images that will be edited repeatedly (JPEG loses quality with each save)
  • PNG/JPEG → WebP: optimize images for web delivery to reduce bandwidth and improve page speed
  • WebP → PNG or JPEG: convert to a format supported by older software or email clients

Transparency handling

When converting a PNG with transparency to JPEG (which has no alpha channel), the transparent areas are filled with white. When converting to WebP, transparency is preserved.

Privacy

All conversion happens locally in your browser via the Canvas API. No images are sent to any server.
