How to use the Word Counter

What each statistic means

• Words: sequences of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated words (e.g. "well-being") count as one word.
• Characters: total number of characters including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks.
• Characters (no spaces): useful for platforms that limit character count excluding spaces (some social media, SMS).
• Sentences: text segments ending with a period, exclamation mark, or question mark.
• Paragraphs: text blocks separated by blank lines.
• Lines: total line count including blank lines.

Reading and speaking time estimates

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute: the average for adults reading silently. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, typical for a clear presentation or podcast.

Both figures are averages and vary with content type. Technical content with code or formulas reads slower; simple narrative reads faster. Use these estimates for planning blog posts, presentations, video scripts, and SEO metadata (meta descriptions should aim for 150-160 characters).
