About the SERP Preview
Simulate how your page appears in Google search results. Title pixels are measured using Google's approximate rendering font (Arial 20px desktop / 16px mobile). Descriptions use a fixed character limit.
Title and description guidelines
| Element | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Title (pixels) | ≤600 px | ≤496 px |
| Description (characters) | ≤158 chars | ≤120 chars |
Pixel widths are approximations, actual rendering varies by operating system, browser, and query context. Google may also rewrite titles and descriptions dynamically.
Best practices for title tags
- Place the primary keyword near the beginning
- Include your brand name at the end (separated by
|or-) - Write for humans first, then optimize for keywords
- Each page should have a unique title
- Avoid keyword stuffing, it can result in Google rewriting your title
Best practices for meta descriptions
- Summarize the page content and include a clear value proposition
- Include the primary keyword naturally (it bolds in SERPs when it matches the query)
- End with a call to action when appropriate
- Each page should have a unique description
- Note: Google does not use meta descriptions as a ranking factor, but they influence click-through rate
UK SERPs: what's different from global Google
Google.co.uk serves several SERP features that affect how your meta tags appear and how much space remains for your organic result:
- People Also Ask (PAA): more prominent on UK SERPs for informational queries. A strong H2 structure on your page increases the chance of appearing in PAA boxes, which pull text independently of your meta description.
- Bing: holds around 10% search market share in the UK (higher than in France or Germany). Submitting your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools is worth doing for UK-targeted sites. Bing displays titles up to ~65 characters and descriptions up to ~165 characters.
- Rich results: Google UK frequently shows rich snippets for recipes, events, products, and reviews. These replace the standard meta description display with structured data output. Add
schema.orgmarkup to qualify. - UK Right to be Forgotten: under UK GDPR, individuals can request removal of specific URLs from Google UK search results via Google's removal tool. This applies independently from the EU (post-Brexit). Add
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">to pages that must stay out of search results.
