What do "cycle day" and "cycle length" actually mean?

Cycle day 1 is the first day of full flow bleeding, not spotting. Cycle length is counted from that day up to the day before your next period starts. The NHS lists a normal range of 21 to 35 days, with 28 days often quoted as an average, though very few people are exactly average every month.

A tracker that only shows a single predicted date is giving you the midpoint of a range, not a guarantee. Logging several cycles in a row gives the tool real data to work from instead of a textbook default, so the prediction narrows as your own pattern builds up.

The second half of the cycle, called the luteal phase, is far more consistent than the first half for most people, typically staying within a day or two of the same length cycle after cycle. How does a tracker work out my fertile window?

Ovulation usually happens 12 to 16 days before the next period starts, counting backwards rather than forwards from day 1. This is why apps that only count forward from your last period tend to drift out of sync for anyone whose cycle length varies month to month.

The fertile window itself spans roughly six days: the five days before ovulation, when sperm can already be present and waiting, plus the day of ovulation itself. An egg only survives around 12 to 24 hours once released, but sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days, which is why the window opens well before ovulation actually occurs.

Signs like a change in cervical mucus, a small rise in basal body temperature after ovulation, or mild one-sided pelvic twinges can support what the calculation suggests, though none of them confirm ovulation on their own.

Does my hydration need actually change across the cycle?

Yes, and it is one of the more overlooked numbers in cycle tracking. Progesterone rises sharply after ovulation and has a mild thermogenic effect, nudging resting body temperature up slightly and increasing fluid turnover during the luteal phase. Many people also notice more water retention and bloating in the days right before a period, which is a shift in fluid distribution rather than a sign of needing less water.

Blood loss during a period, combined with any premenstrual changes in appetite or activity, means fluid needs are not flat across the month. Basing a daily water target on your current cycle phase, alongside your weight, activity level, and climate, gives a more accurate figure than a single fixed number used year round.
