About the Stroop Test
The Stroop effect (1935) shows that naming the ink color of a color word is slower when the word and ink color conflict (e.g. the word "RED" written in blue ink). The interference measures cognitive processing speed and executive function.

Why does the Stroop effect occur?
Reading is a highly automatic process, the brain processes the word meaning involuntarily. Naming the ink color requires actively suppressing the word meaning, which takes extra cognitive effort. This is why you are slower on incongruent trials even though you know to ignore the word.
Clinical and research uses
The Stroop test is used clinically to detect frontal lobe dysfunction (e.g. in traumatic brain injury, ADHD, dementia) and in cognitive psychology research. It is one of the most widely replicated experiments in psychology, with thousands of published studies.
Scientific context: norms and key findings
MacLeod (1991) reviewed over 700 Stroop studies; the effect has since been replicated in every tested language and culture. Key normative findings:
- Typical interference effect: healthy adults are 100-200 ms slower on incongruent than congruent trials. Effects above 300 ms may suggest reduced executive function. The effect is measured as response time difference, not accuracy (most healthy adults achieve near-100% accuracy on both conditions).
- Age effects: the Stroop interference effect increases with age , roughly 100 ms in young adults, rising to 150-200 ms in adults over 65. This reflects age-related decline in inhibitory control, one of the executive functions that weakens earliest.
- Language effects: the Stroop effect is present in all tested languages and writing systems. It is somewhat smaller in languages with non-Latin scripts for native speakers of those scripts, because reading automaticity differs by script type. Color-word Stroop requires the reading response to be automatic, so the degree of reading training matters.
- Practice effects: unlike simple reaction time tasks, Stroop interference does not substantially improve with practice on the standard task. This makes it a stable, relatively practice-independent measure of executive control across testing sessions.
