Age and UK legal thresholds

Knowing your exact age to the day matters more than it might seem. In the UK, several rights and entitlements hinge on precise age thresholds, and a single day can make a legal difference. This calculator gives years, months, and remaining days so you can check eligibility with confidence.

UK age thresholds at a glance

AgeUK threshold
17Apply for a provisional driving licence; start learning to drive (accompanied)
18Full driving licence, vote, buy alcohol, open an ISA, sign contracts
21Hire a car without young-driver surcharge (most rental companies)
25National Living Wage rate (higher band applies)
66Current State Pension age (rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028)
75Free TV licence (reinstated for over-75s on Pension Credit)

Calculating age at a specific date

The tool lets you set a reference date other than today. This is useful for legal documents, HMRC submissions, benefit claims, or checking whether a child meets a school-year cut-off (31 August in England and Wales). Enter the relevant date in the second field to get the exact age on that day.

Leap year edge cases

People born on 29 February have a birthday that only exists in leap years. For legal purposes in the UK, the age is reached on 28 February in non-leap years , meaning a person born on 29 February 2000 turned 18 on 28 February 2018, not 1 March. The calculator handles this correctly.

Limits of this tool

This calculator works with the Gregorian calendar from 1582 onwards. Dates before 1900 may carry calendar-reform ambiguity in some jurisdictions. For official legal documents, always verify with the relevant authority. This tool does not constitute legal advice.
