Why yield estimates need a range, not a single figure

A single average yield figure hides a lot of variation. Two fields growing the same crop in the same country can produce very different harvests depending on the year's weather, the soil, and the variety sown. This tool gives a low, average, and high scenario for each crop instead of one misleading number, so the estimate reflects the real spread seen across a typical growing season.

Limits of this calculator

This estimate uses a single national average per crop and does not take into account the specific quality of your soil, the exact weather of the growing season, the variety planted, irrigation, or fertiliser use. Treat the result as an order of magnitude to plan around, not a precise forecast of what a given field will produce. DEFRA publishes updated UK cereal and oilseed yield statistics each year, and actual farm results can sit well outside the ranges shown here in an unusual year.
