Memory Span Test

The digit span task measures your working memory capacity, the amount of information you can hold and manipulate in short-term memory. It is used in psychological assessments including IQ tests.

Average scores

  • Forward span: average adult = 6-7 digits; tests simple short-term retention
  • Backward span: average adult = 4-5 digits; requires mental manipulation, taxes working memory more deeply

What affects memory span?

  • Age: span increases through childhood, peaks in young adulthood, gradually declines after 60
  • Fatigue: sleep deprivation significantly reduces working memory capacity
  • Stress and anxiety: compete for working memory resources
  • Alcohol and substances: impair short-term memory formation

How to improve memory span

  • Chunking: group digits into meaningful units: 1-9-4-5 → "nineteen forty-five"
  • Regular practice: working memory is trainable; span improves with consistent exercise
  • Sleep: memory consolidation happens during sleep; 7-9 hours is optimal
  • Physical exercise: aerobic exercise has been shown to improve working memory in multiple studies

Scientific context: Miller's "7 ± 2" and Cowan's revision

Working memory capacity is one of the most studied topics in cognitive psychology. Two key papers define the debate:

  • Miller (1956): "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two" in Psychological Review established the digit span of 5-9 items as a fundamental cognitive limit. It remains among the most cited papers in psychology. Miller noted that the "7" applied to meaningful chunks, not individual bits.
  • Cowan (2001): revised the estimate to ~4 chunks, arguing that Miller's "7" included chunking benefits. True working memory capacity , the number of items held simultaneously without rehearsal or chunking , is closer to 4 items. A phone number remembered as "19-45" (one chunk) rather than four digits illustrates the difference.
  • Age trajectory: digit span increases through childhood (3-4 digits at age 3-4, 5-6 at age 8-10) and peaks at 7-9 digits in young adults (20-35 years). It declines gradually, reaching 5-6 digits on average by age 65-70. Backward span , which requires active mental manipulation , shows a steeper age-related decline than forward span.
  • Clinical use: digit span subtests feature in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) as a component of the Working Memory Index. Scores more than 1.5 standard deviations below age norms may indicate attention deficits, anxiety, or cognitive decline warranting further assessment.
