What does a memory recall score actually tell you?

A short-term memory recall test usually shows you a list of items, digits, or a short sequence, then asks you to reproduce it after a short delay. The number you get right is often compared to the old benchmark of "7 plus or minus 2" items, a figure from 1950s psychology that still gets quoted on almost every online quiz result page.

That number is a rough guide, not a diagnosis. Your recall score on any single attempt is affected by how tired you are, how much background noise there was, and whether you used a mental trick (grouping digits into pairs, for example) without realising it. Why is naming colours in the Stroop test so hard?

The Stroop test shows you a colour word, such as "blue", printed in a different ink colour, say red, and asks you to name the ink colour, not read the word. Most people are noticeably slower and make more errors on these mismatched trials than on trials where the word and the ink match. This slowdown is called the Stroop effect, and it happens because reading is so automatic that your brain processes the word almost involuntarily, creating interference with the colour-naming task you are actually meant to be doing.

What does an attention test measure over time?

Sustained attention tests, sometimes called vigilance tasks, ask you to keep responding to occasional targets over a longer stretch, often a minute or more, while ignoring similar-looking distractors. What researchers consistently find is the vigilance decrement: accuracy and reaction speed both tend to drop the longer the task runs, even in people who started out fully focused. It is a well-documented feature of how sustained attention works, not a personal failing.

Your score on this kind of test usually combines accuracy (did you correctly click targets and skip distractors) with consistency over the full session, rather than just your fastest response. A high score early on that falls away by the end is completely normal and reflects how attention naturally works over time, particularly on a repetitive task.
