Attention and Concentration Test

Sustained attention (vigilance) is the ability to maintain focus over time. Selective attention is the ability to filter relevant stimuli from distractors. Both decline with fatigue, sleep deprivation, and age.

How the score is calculated

The d' (d-prime) measure from signal detection theory quantifies sensitivity:

d' = Z(hit rate) − Z(false alarm rate)

A higher d' means better attention, you correctly detect targets while avoiding false alarms. A score of 0 means chance-level performance.

What affects attention performance?

  • Sleep: even one night of poor sleep dramatically impairs sustained attention
  • Time of day: attention is typically best in mid-morning and early afternoon
  • Caffeine: improves alertness and reduces reaction time for 3-5 hours
  • Meditation: regular mindfulness practice improves sustained attention
  • ADHD: characterized by deficits in sustained and selective attention

Attention tips

Adults experience an involuntary attention lapse every 10-20 minutes on monotone tasks. Taking regular breaks (e.g. every 25 minutes with the Pomodoro technique) and getting sufficient sleep improve attentional performance significantly.

Scientific context: d-prime norms and the vigilance decrement

Two robust findings from sustained attention research are directly relevant to interpreting your score:

  • d' (d-prime) benchmarks: a score of 2.0-3.0 is typical for alert, healthy young adults in simple visual detection tasks. Below 1.0 approaches chance-level discrimination. d' is preferable to raw accuracy because it separates sensitivity from response bias: a cautious person who rarely responds will have few false alarms but also miss many targets, keeping accuracy high while d' reveals the deficit.
  • Vigilance decrement: Sustained attention research consistently shows that detection performance drops by 5-15% within the first 15-30 minutes on monotone tasks (Parasuraman 1984). The effect is larger when targets are rare (less than 10% of events). This is not unique to any clinical population , it is a fundamental property of human attentional systems.
  • ADHD context: individuals with ADHD show disproportionate vigilance decrements and higher false alarm rates, rather than simply slower overall processing. d' captures this pattern better than simple correct/incorrect counts, which is why versions of this task (Conners' CPT) are used in clinical ADHD assessment. A single web-based test cannot diagnose ADHD.
