How the elevation effort calculator works

The Naismith rule adds 1 hour of travel time for every 600 m of positive elevation gain (approximately 100 m per 10 minutes). The flat-equivalent distance is calculated by converting this extra time into distance at your base pace.

Formula

Extra time (minutes) = elevation gain (m) / 60

Flat equivalent distance (km) = actual distance (km) + (extra time / flat pace)

Example: 15 km route with 800 m elevation gain at 6:00 min/km pace:

  • Extra time = 800 / 60 = 13.3 minutes
  • Extra distance = 13.3 / 6.0 = 2.2 km
  • Flat equivalent = 15 + 2.2 = 17.2 km

When to use this tool

  • Trail planning: compare the true effort of routes with different elevation profiles
  • Pacing on hilly courses: set realistic finish time expectations for trail races and mountain runs
  • Training load comparison: measure the equivalent flat distance to compare different workouts
  • Effort estimation for races: many trail races use flat-equivalent distance in their descriptions

Limitations

  • The Naismith rule is a simplified model, it does not account for terrain difficulty (technical trails, snow, mud)
  • Descents have little effect in the basic Naismith model (a corrected version adds time for steep descents)
  • Individual fitness level affects the relationship between elevation and pace, faster runners lose relatively less time on uphills

UK and European trail context

  • UTMB World Series: all UTMB Group races (including Lakeland 50/100, CCC, OCC) list both actual distance and elevation-equivalent km for qualification criteria.
  • ITRA (International Trail Running Association): based in France, ITRA awards finisher points using a formula combining D+ and distance , the global standard for European trail race qualifying.
  • Fell Runners Association (FRA): classifies UK fell races in categories A-C by steepness (ascent per km). Category A = steep mountain races; Category C = rolling hills. Effort differences match Naismith closely.
  • Strava Estimated Moving Time: Strava uses an elevation-adjusted metric similar to Naismith, which is why Strava times on hilly routes differ from flat-route predictions.
