How to use the Running Pace Calculator

  • Time → Pace: enter a distance and your finish time to get pace (min/km or min/mi) and speed.
  • Pace → Time: enter a pace and distance to predict your finish time.
  • Speed → Pace: convert km/h or mph to min/km or min/mi.

Pace vs speed: understanding the conversion

Pace and speed are reciprocals. To convert:

  • Speed (km/h) to pace (min/km): 60 / speed. Example: 12 km/h → 60/12 = 5:00 min/km
  • Pace (min/km) to speed (km/h): 60 / pace (in decimal minutes). Example: 5:30 min/km = 5.5 → 60/5.5 = 10.9 km/h

Common race distances

  • 5K: 5.000 km, beginner race distance
  • 10K: 10.000 km, most popular road race distance
  • Half marathon: 21.0975 km, the 13.1-mile race
  • Marathon: 42.195 km, the classic 26.2-mile race

parkrun: born in the UK, now worldwide

parkrun is a free, timed 5K run held every Saturday morning across thousands of locations globally. It started in Bushy Park, Teddington (London) in October 2004 with just 13 runners. By 2024, it operates in over 22 countries with millions of registered participants. For UK runners, a parkrun result is the easiest free benchmark for current 5K fitness, and the pace calculator above can translate that time into training paces or race predictions.

London Marathon: the world's most oversubscribed race

The London Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors alongside Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. Entry is allocated primarily by public ballot, in recent years, over 800,000 people applied for roughly 50,000 places, giving an acceptance rate of around 6%. Good-for-age (GFA) entry is also available for runners who meet time standards (e.g. sub-3:05 for men 18-40, sub-3:45 for women 18-40, verify current standards at virginmoneylondonmarathon.com). Championship entry requires even faster times.

Boston Marathon qualifying times

The Boston Marathon uses strict qualifying time standards based on age and sex. Meeting the BQ (Boston Qualifier) standard only guarantees entry consideration, in recent years, runners have needed to beat the standard by 2-6 minutes to secure a place due to oversubscription. The current BQ standards for common age groups:

Verify the current standards at baa.org, they are updated periodically. Use the pace calculator above to find the per-km pace required to hit your target BQ time.
